What is Bread Not Bombs?

The Weekend Bread Basket is a community initiative based in Hobart, Tasmania. Each week, surplus bread and baked goods are collected and distributed to people who need them — keeping good food out of the bin and putting it into people’s hands instead. It started simply and has kept going, week after week, through a small group of volunteers who show up consistently.

Where the Bread Goes

The route runs across Hobart every Saturday and Sunday, hitting a handful of regular stops.

Mathers Lane on Bath Street in the CBD has been a steady weekly stop — a public spot where anyone can come and take what they need, no questions asked. Safe Space at Mission Australia, a local homeless shelter, receives a delivery each Saturday, making sure that people without stable housing have access to fresh bread. A public housing block is also on the route, with bread brought directly to residents. On Sundays, baskets of bread are made available at a local church for the congregation and anyone who comes through.

Beyond the fixed stops, a Facebook community page helps connect with people who can’t easily get out. Home deliveries go to individuals who need bread brought to their door. If you know someone who could use this, reach out.

A Record of Ongoing Work

This project has been running consistently since its early days in Hobart. The delivery route has grown, the volunteer team has changed and expanded, and the reach has widened — but the core work has stayed the same: collecting bread that would go to waste and making sure it gets to people who can use it. Each week is another round of pickups, sorting, and deliveries. This page is a record of that ongoing effort.

Our Volunteers

None of this happens without the people who give their time. The volunteers who show up week after week — for pickups, for deliveries, for the unglamorous work of sorting bread on a Saturday morning — are what keep the Bread Basket running. Genuinely grateful for each of them.

Get Involved or Support the Work

If you’d like to join the team, there’s always room. Whether you can help with pickups, deliveries, or simply spreading the word, it matters. Head to the Contact page to get in touch.

If you’d like to make a donation to help keep this going, it means a lot. Every contribution helps cover the small costs of running a consistent community program, and allows the project to reach more people each week.
